New Moon: Yoga Meditation Mantra Practice

Updated: Jan 4, 2022

New Moon is a magical and mystical time, according to the Yogic scriptures it was a sacred part of the month. Magically it is a time to do ceremony, rest, and take the time to contemplate, think of where you are full? where do you need to let go?

NEW MOON

Downward moving energy (Apanic)

You may be Feeling:

  • Lower mental energy (the mind is affected more than the body)

  • Decreased fluids in body

  • Possible increase in any addictions

  • Draining in energy (as in ‘the end of a breath’)

Create a Practice that takes into account the energy of New Moon

Here is a simple guide you can build into your Yoga, meditation practice etc

  • Gentle Pranayama

  • Mantra: Chanting Moon Mantra or protective mantra (Durga etc)

  • Choose Slow moving, cooling and calming Yoga sequences

  • Take extra time in Savasana

  • For meditation: Focus on the Light-body. Great crystals to use are Elestial Smokey Quartz or Amethyst as they are both highly protective, as always use your intuition on what will work best for you)

  • Positive Light Manifesting meditations are also good, Jyoti Light Meditation (see my Blog for instructions). Bringing in as much light and love into your inner self on New Moon, let the light wash you

NEW MOON MEDITATION:

Where are you full?

What do you need to let go of?

The new moon energy corresponds to the end of exhalation when the force of apana is greatest.

Take a moment to exhale completely, feeling your energy drain with the breath.

Apana is a contracting, downward moving force that makes us feel calm and grounded, but dense and disinclined towards physical exertion.

This is a powerful healing time.

Honor your senses.

New moon is also a good time for fasting or to use essential oils, especially frankincense oil. Burn frankincense resin, incense sticks or vapourise the essential oil or even use in massage.

It is a time of heightened mental and emotional sensitivity. Addictions may be stronger.

NOTE: During full and new moon some Yoga practice will have a resting night, this is due to the body being made of 70% water and the moon having an effect on water element. It is recommended that yoga practice on (and around, I always allow 1-3 days before and after the New moon, those sensitive will feel the energy of the new moon before and after the actual event)

MANTRA FOR NEW MOON

Some ancient practice includes the use of the Moon Mantra, and recommends it is chanted on New Moon 108 times:

OM SHRIM SOM SOMAYA NAMAHA

(used to connect with the planetary deity and to energize all the higher powers of the Moon)

It is also recommended you use a protective mantra on New Moon as this is the time when your energy my need topping up or protecting.

A meditation on darkness:

What is darkness?

Darkness is only an absence of light

It is a 'void'

there is actually NO DARKNESS

only no presence of LIGHT

FILL THE VOID WITH LIGHT

Enjoy your new moon mantras and meditations

:)

Namaste
